Surf culture has always been steeped in traditions, from respecting the hierarchy in the lineup to honoring the unspoken rules of the waves. However, etiquette is not about localism. It’s about fostering a respectful and inclusive environment where everyone, regardless of their experience level or origin, can enjoy the ocean safely and harmoniously.
At Queen Of The Point, we emphasize that surf etiquette is for everyone and is rooted in mutual respect and understanding. While many who enforce etiquette happen to be locals, their role is less about asserting dominance and more about ensuring safety and maintaining the flow of the lineup. This distinction is critical in separating etiquette from localism, which can sometimes lead to exclusivity or territorial behavior.
Respect the Lineup: Understand the priority rules. The surfer closest to the peak has the right of way.
Don’t Drop In: Avoid paddling into a wave when another surfer is already riding it.
Share the Waves: Be mindful of others and ensure everyone gets a chance to ride. Don’t be a wave hog—let some waves go by for others to enjoy.
Communicate Clearly: A simple “going left” or “going right” can avoid misunderstandings and collisions.
Take Care of the Ocean: Always leave the beach better than you found it.
Through our events and community outreach, Queen Of The Point educates surfers about the importance of etiquette. We encourage experienced surfers to lead by example and create a welcoming space for newcomers. By fostering a culture of respect, we hope to bridge the gap between tradition and modern surfing values.
Surfing is a communal experience, and etiquette is the foundation of that harmony. It’s not about asserting territorial claims but about ensuring that the lineup remains a safe and enjoyable space for everyone. At Queen Of The Point, we celebrate the shared joy of surfing and the community it creates, one wave at a time.
