The mermaid magic of the Queen Of The Point in the land of mabuhay… the Philippines!

1-4 February 2024 – San Juan, La Union, Philippines. The Queen of The Point, an all-women’s longboard surf competition, concluded its latest event in the picturesque town of San Juan, La Union. The competition ended with a spectacular display of talent and camaraderie among surfers. After a suspenseful wait over three days with calm seas, the competitors were greeted with ideal 2-foot waves at Mona Lisa Point, setting the stage for an unforgettable day of surfing.

The competition kicked off early at 7:30 am and wrapped up by 4:00 pm. It offered participants from various divisions a chance to showcase their skills on the glassy waves of Mona Lisa Point. The event was not just about surfing. It included a turtle release and an awarding party, adding to the day’s excitement and joy.

A Great Turnout

With over 40 surfers participating, the event saw a wide range of talents. From local prodigy Luna Landrigan, aged 6, to seasoned pros and enthusiasts over 40, including the 35+ division’s champion, Menchie Par, aged 47. The diversity and inclusivity of the competition highlighted the spirit of Queen of The Point – to celebrate women’s surfing across all ages and levels.

Standouts

Malia Ilagan, a 17-year-old from Ventura, California, clinched the Pro Division title. Despite this being her first visit to the Philippines, Ilagan, who is of Filipino descent, expressed her love for the country and the warm welcome she received from the local community and fellow surfers. Her victory was a testament to her exceptional skills and the enriching experience the event offers beyond the competition.

Cash Hoover, a 14-year-old talent from Hawaii, showcased maturity and skill well beyond her years. She impressed everyone by winning the 10-19 Division and securing a runner-up position in the Pro Division.

The event also celebrated victories in other divisions, with Alina Carlsson taking the top spot in the 30-34 Division. Zyra Mae Carbonell, a beauty pageant candidate, won the 20-29 Division. The Novice 13 & Under Division saw Cairille Weichman achieving an almost perfect score. She was closely followed by the youngest competitor, Luna Landrigan, who demonstrated exceptional talent and potential.
