Where It All Began…
The first inception of QOTP was first manifested in the Philippines with the Philippine Wahine Classic, which ran from 2013-2016 on the east coast of Luzon in the semi-remote region of Baler in partnership with Aliya Surf Resort. A decade later, we’re back and headed to the west coast!
QOTP – La Union – February 16-20, 2023
The Philippines consists of over 7,100 islands, some of which carrying some of the world’s best hidden gems. On the main island of Luzon, nestled just outside of San Fernando, the capital city of the province of La Union, lies a collection of warm water surf breaks that can offer fun for every type of board rider. The relatively young, but thriving surf community there is made up of all ages, genders, and abilities with a lady longboard revolution in full swing!

Budget
The Circle Hostel
The Circle Hostel is a chain of budget friendly eco-hostels in the Philippines. We want to be a sanctuary for the artsy and the adventurous where people can express themselves freely among each other and on our walls. Because at the Circle Hostel, there are no strangers. Our bunk-houses are all fan-cooled and in dormitory style. You can opt between an all-female dorm or the co-ed one. Or go for an ergonomic hammock with a built-in mosquito netting. Our bathrooms have hot/cold showers and out toilets have bidets. Not too shabby for a hostel! Breakfast is a simple meal of fresh bread, spreads and bananas.
Vessel Hostel
Vessel hostel is a four level hostel composed of repurposed shipping containers stacked on top of each other. Designed by surfer architects Buji Libarnes and Nikki Dela Paz-Libarnes, Vessel Hostel is an extension of their home, located below the hostel, and a reflection of their love for classic surfing and the nostalgic lifestyle of its golden era.
It’s simplicity and efficient space planning make Vessel Hostel a cozy and restful place to stay in La Union, perfect for single back packers or traveling groups.

THE SURF
Beach breaks, reef breaks, and point breaks, oh my! This area of the Philippines, positioned in the West Philippine Sea, pretty much has it all when it comes to wave selection! November to February is north swell season, also known as Amihan season, where the winds and waves come more from the north.
Monaliza Point
Generally a right-hander and the main break in Urbiztondo, Monaliza Point breaks over reef and can be punchy with size and offers an exciting, fast take-off into a soft peeling shoulder.
Carrille aka Jesus Point
One of the longest waves on the island of Luzon, Carrille, aka Jesus Point, is situated on a once booming resort site that saw dynamite fishing back in the day. Referred by the non-surfing locals as “the elbow,” this long righthand point break needs good size swell and is a favorite for all who get the chance to ride its waves.
